B. Mathematical modeling & algorithm development
In the description of many complex problems from engineering, natural and social sciences a strong modeling component is necessary in order to reduce complexity of the problem without loosing its main features. The aim of this process is to obtain finally a mathematical model which can be studied using modern methods from applied mathematics, numerical analysis and computing. The importance of the modeling process increases with the complexity of the problem. Strongly aligned with mathematical modeling is the development of algorithmic approaches and numerical solution algorithms which exploit the structure of the mathematical model and which are able to conserve its physical properties. All the groups involved in this center study highly complex problems. A strong collaboration and exchange on the modeling and algorithmic part of the problems increases the scientific progress significantly.
