C. Model-based optimization and design
Within the DFG scientific priority programme 1253 entitled Optimization with PDE constraints currently the mathematical and algorithmical foundations are developed for efficiently solving optimization problems subject to constraints involving distributed parameter systems, and thus to perform the transition from model-based numerical simulations to model-based design and optimal control. For this purpose the interaction of mathematical modeling, optimization techniques, numerical simulation, scientific computing, and computer science is essential. It is now timely to transfer and apply these technologies to challenging real world engineering, medical, physical, industrial and economical applications, such as ship- and aircraft-design, treatment planning in cancer therapy, optimization of magnetization dynamics, parameter identification in mechanical and/or meteorological systems, just to mention few. To achieve and establish this task close interdisciplinary collaboration is required between all scientific areas involved in the respective application.
